The rabies vaccine was produced at the Ankara Institute of Hygiene (Hıfzıssıhha) in the 1930s. Among the scientists who fled the Nazis and came to Türkiye, Dr. Emil Gotschlich identified biological agents (bacteria and viruses) and led epidemiological studies; Stefan Baecher standardized the body’s defense mechanisms against these microbes (serum/vaccine); and Eduard Scheller elevated the chemical safety, purity, and production technology of this entire process to international standards.
